FEMA Emergency Management Plan

In September of 2009, the RIIA board applied for FEMA (Federal Emergency
Management Act) status in order to be eligible for disaster funds from a catastrophic
event (such as an earthquake).  FEMA funds are only available to “preapproved”
plans.  An Island FEMA Committee was formed to attend monthly meetings
sponsored by Pierce County (PC) and in April of 2010, PC submitted our application
to FEMA on RIIA’s behalf.  There are no fees or obligations associated with this
program.  In addition to federal funds to replace the bridge after a catastrophic event,
a “Seismic Mitigation Plan” gives RIIA the ability to apply for additional federal grant
funds in the future.  This is not a bridge replacement / maintenance solution but does
give the Island another layer of “insurance”.

In November of 2010, RIIA passed a Resolution to adopt the RIIA Hazard Mitigation Plan.
It was later approved by Pierce County and FEMA.  A final copy of the Plan will be
posted once it is received from Pierce County.
